What Does the Bible Say About Finances?

The Bible is an incredible resource that holds valuable lessons for how we should live our lives as followers of Christ. These lessons range from respecting one another to helping those in need to forgiving those who have wronged us. However, there’s another, more unexpected, area that the Bible instructs us on: finances. So, what exactly does the Bible say about finances?

God is the source.

Deuteronomy 8:18 - “But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”

This passage reminds us that we are only capable of gaining wealth and money through God. He provides for us and makes all things possible. Without Him, we would have nothing.

Make a plan.

Luke 14:28-30 - “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it—lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’?”

This passage reminds us to make a plan for everything we do, including with our finances. This means that we should save our money and only take on expenses in our lives that we have the money to pay for. It is imperative to be prepared so we always know we will be successful in our endeavors.

Don’t be greedy.

Mark 8:36 - “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?”

Luke 12:15 - “Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.’”

These two passages from Mark and Luke remind us that money is not the most important thing in our lives. Money is important to build a life and provide for our loved ones, but if it becomes the focus of our existence then we become lost. Moreover, if you are truly a servant of God, money cannot be your top priority. You cannot be devoted to both God and money, and money is only possible through God.

Be charitable.

Matthew 6:1-4 - “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. ‘So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.’”

This passage stresses the importance of Christian generosity and being charitable with your money, but not to give so you get attention and praise. You should give for the sake of helping other people and sharing the gifts that God has blessed you with.

Avoid debt.

Proverbs 22:7 - “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.”

Falling into debt changes how we live our lives. We lose our freedom because we are now trying to pay back whoever we owe money to and this struggle consumes our daily life. Staying out of debt ensures we avoid these issues.
