What Does Philanthropic Mean?

You’ve probably heard of someone or something being referred to as “philanthropic.” But what does philanthropic mean? Philanthropic is the adjective form of philanthropy, and refers to a person or organization who is generous and looks to promote the welfare of others. This commonly involves donating money to important causes, but can also involve the giving of time or other resources. Philanthropy can also refer to an organization devoted entirely to charitable goals, such as a foundation or charity.

“Philanthropy” comes from the Latin philanthropia and the Greek philanthrōpia, which is derived from philanthrōpos, meaning “loving people.” Ultimately, this is a combination of phil (love) + anthrōpos (people). The word “philanthropy” was first used in English in the 1620s.

Organizations, individuals, businesses, and other entities can be thought of as philanthropic based on their actions, and how they try to help others. Usually, billionaires like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are highlighted for their philanthropic deeds, but anyone can be philanthropic in their life.

While those who are wealthy often get the most notice for being philanthropic, philanthropy isn’t necessarily about how much money you give to charity, but how much you do to help others throughout your life, even if you don’t always have a lot of money to do so.

There are many different philanthropic organizations that are focused on making the world a better place, but these organizations rely on charitable contributions to continue their important work. As a whole, the country of Canada is very philanthropic as over 5 million people donate over 10 billion dollars to charity every year.
