What Is Christian Generosity?

2 Corinthians 9:6-8 tells us, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

Christian generosity is an attitude of the heart, a way of living that flows out of thankfulness to God for His great mercy and grace. How we give back is a form of worship to Him, and is less about money than the posture we are taking before God, from whom all things come. Sharing with others is a gift that allows Him to use our resources and time to do His work on earth. 

Contributing your time or funds to a ministry you believe in is the equivalent of giving to God, because everything we have flows from Him. Those gifts allow us to give to others. Generosity doesn’t create a deficit, but instead generates even more resources. It is similar to love, in that loving more than one person doesn’t mean that you’ll have less to give to someone else. Bestowing love results in more of it.
